Then choose where you want the file placed on your computer by using the drop-down menu bar to pick a location. To restore one (or more) file/folder select it from the panel in the window. In the window that comes up, you can navigate to all of your backed up files. When you click on it, you are taken to an alphabetical order list of your backed up files. Storage sites do not offer unlimited file uploads at set prices, so that you end up paying quite a bit more if you want to store several hundred gigabytes.įinally, there is the Restore tab. Online storage services such as Google Drive (formerly Google Docs) and Amazon Cloud Drive differ from Carbonite and other similar backup services such as Mozy and Backblaze in that files are not automatically backed up, but uploaded manually and stored. Backblaze has a similar timetable for deleting files that have been placed in the trash and emptied. Carbonite keeps files that you have placed in the trash or garbage (and emptied) for 30 days.

It is meant to be a backup for the files on your computer-not a place to store files in order to free up space on your hard drive. Carbonite eventually does and will dump your files when you put the in the trash on your end, but not in the same way a platform like Time Machine does. Once you opt for that choice, your files appear with color-coded bullets next to them.Ĭarbonite Home is online backup-not online storage. If you click on a red dot and then the “Back This Up” button, the dot changes to green and the folder is backed up. If you click on a green or yellow dot and then the “Do Not Back This Up” button, the dot turns red within 72 hours, and Carbonite won’t back up that file or remove it if it has already been uploaded. Here is a guide to the color coding: green signals that the file is uploaded green with a hole in it shows folders in which some files have been partially selected for backup yellow indicates files that are waiting to be backed up red shows files that won’t be backed up. This is the window where you can identify where the files are in the backup process. After you click on the Backup tab, your files appear with color-coded bullets next to them. To the left of each file is a color-coded bullet that lets you know where that file is in the computer backup process.

This covers just one PC and, as of this writing, there is no external hard drive backup for Mac. The other two versions of Carbonite do support backup for external hard drives-$99 per year HomePlus, and $149 per year HomePremier. You might think that you can simply drag the data from the external drive to the computer temporarily to upload it, but when you delete it from the hard drive Carbonite will too, within 30 days. The primary drawback of Carbonite is that the Home Plan does not back up external hard drives, an option you’d probably like to have in the event you hear the deadly clicking sound coming from your external device (a telltale sign that it is about to break down) or some other malfunction where you lose all of your files. This is a one-way street, though, as you can’t upload images to Carbonite from any other computer or device for which you haven’t bought a subscription.

You can access your backed up files on these devices either through an app that you download or by accessing your files on their website from the browser installed on your device (Backblaze can’t do this CrashPlan+ can). The company permits you to choose what you want to back up (Backblaze doesn’t CrashPlan+ does), and, perhaps most pertinent today, allows access to your image files via mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.). It also allows you to set Carbonite in Recover mode.Ĭarbonite’s appeal lies in the unlimited number of files it can store, but many other services have that offer as well (Backblaze at $5/month or $50/year CrashPlan+ at $5/month or $60/year).

The Status tab offers options to start, stop, and pause Carbonite plus offers options to enable/disable/pause the system. Each tab leads to different sets of options, allowing you to change the status, view the state of your backup, and restore files to your computer.

Once your files are uploaded you can access them using that software or by going to the company’s website (On a Mac, the Preferences panel contains three tabs: Status, Backup, and Restore. You then set up your Carbonite preferences. In order to use Carbonite, you download software into your computer with controls installed on your desktop.
